This is a great, great home theater! I went to Wal-Mart with the sole idea of buying the Philips HTS3372D/F7 for half the price of this one. However, they were out and this was the only one they had left… and I was desperate. Installing my new home theater (which took only minutes), I was a little underwhelmed. I’ll start at the auto calibration. Now in order to begin the calibration you must hook the microphone into the front and place it where you commonly sit. Sounds simple enough, right. Well, yes and no. The speakers then proceed to blast you with the MOST annoying static “sounds”. The whole process takes about 3 minutes. This wouldn’t be too bad if it actually worked the first time. Most of the speakers couldn’t be read the first time and I had to redo it about 5 times til I got it just right. So now that its all hooked up, its time to mess with the settings. This is where I had the most problems. Samsung has kind of embedded the settings in the remote and while not really the fault of the machine its a real pain to access. Although, to be fair to the home theater, it had it all in the manual (which I only skimmed). So in other words, make sure you read the manual! Now that everything is as it should be, it’s time to test it out. In order to get the best sound possible, I connected it to my PS3 with the Digital optical cord. Now let me say that this particular Home Theater has excellent sound! I used to have difficulty hearing what was being said in the movie, but not anymore. Everything is crystal clear. However, I was surprised that the Bass didn’t feel as strong as I thought it should. That all changed when I put in The Relic. I was completely blown away! The sound was scarier than the movie! It felt and sounded like the monster was in my room! My floors and walls were shaking from the footsteps, the roars and wheezes chilled my spine. The point: make sure you have quality audio movies. It’s now been about 2 months and everything is still working and am still loving my favorite impulse buy. While setup was a little tedious the sound more than makes up for it, I would recommend getting the Samsung HT-C550 DVD Home Theater to anyone with the money.
Also, the back speakers are only wireless READY meaning you have to get the adapter, which will run about $99!
Rating: 5 / 5
RATING: I highly recommend the Samsung HTC 550.
PRICE: Although the system is worth $250, I paid $220 and feel it is a great value. Try to find it for less than $250, but know you are getting a lot for the money.
RECEIVER: The receiver looks great with a hidden DVD drive and touch-sensitive buttons. The DVD drive looks great, but it not particularly durable. A little door slides down and the drive pops out. The buttons work great and the volume button is a silver protruding round curve. It looks great, but it has a white backlight that is a little too bright, and can be distracting in the dark. A “dimmer” feature dims the input display screen, but (strangely, unfortunately) does not dim the volume buttons.
SPEAKERS: The speakers sound great. They are very clear and have plenty of power. Although it is not hard to max out the system, you should find it plenty loud for watching movies in 5.1 surround. The center speaker looks and sounds outstanding. (The back speakers can be even be made wireless with a $100 wireless adapter, which I am considering, and believe will be an excellent addition.) Although you can buy the speakers alone on eBay (around $40), they sound great with this amplified receiver.
SUB: The subwoofer is pretty good as well. It’s small, but it has been sufficient for me. It has a nice front design and the speaker is on its left side. With a Power Bass mode, it has plenty of bass and power.
VIDEO: The 1080p upscaling is excellent with an HDMI cable. (Without HDMI, the quality will be below average DVD-quality.) Do not trade in your DVDs because they will look almost as good as Blu-rays with this player. This DVD upscaling player works excellent and plays DVDs better than my Samsung Blu-ray player.
REMOTE: The remote design is excellent and vastly improved over other remotes. It gives you excellent control over the receiver. An input button on the remote lights up; push once, it’s orange to control the receiver, push again, it’s green to control the TV. (It’s basically a universal remote with my Samsung TV.)
iPOD: The iPod dock is an excellent feature, but I have not been able to get it to work yet (with either the iPod mini or the iPod touch.) It takes a long time to “verify,” and I have never waited long enough to see if the “verifying” eventually stopped. Otherwise, the USB port on the front works great with a portable hard drive.
ASC: I have not yet tried the Auto-Calibration feature. The feature allows you to plug in an included microphone into a port on the front of the receiver and run an audio test which will automatically calibrate the speakers for you based on their distance apart in the room. I plan to try it when I get my speakers set up more permanently.
INPUTS/DECODERS: It has 1 digital audio (to hook up to Blu-ray player), 2 HDMI, and 2 component inputs, an iPod dock, a USB port, and an FM radio. Tt does not decode HD sound formats (DD HD, DTS HD). The regular 5.1 surround is excellent with TV, CDS, mp3s, DVDs, and Blu-rays.
OVERALL: 5 Stars. You are getting an excellent and powerful surround sound system and upscaling DVD player for a reasonable price. It may need some tweaking with the set up and settings, but add speaker stands (maybe go wireless) and you will have a system that continues to impress.

Out of the box, this product is what you’d expect it to be. A good budget-friendly option for a surround sound system. The sound is adequate, the picture quality is excellent. The menus and remote require more navigation than they should for basic things like turning on subtitles, but that’s not that big of a deal.
What is a big deal is that 1 week out of the box, this unit started having trouble playing dvds, and within 10 days, the HDMI video output completely failed, rendering the whole thing useless. Had to return it.
Very sorely disappointed in Samsung, which is a brand we thought we could trust. Oh well.
